Through our 5th great grand aunt,Margaret Stewart (1704-1784), and our 5th great grand uncle,John Stewart (1702-1791), we have a new family branch, the Hungerfords. Margaret marries Thomas Hungerford and two of John Stewart's daughters, Elizabeth and Sarah marry brothers Green and Lemuel Hungerford. The Hungferford family has a very colorful history in England. One member of the family is beheaded with Cromwell. I'm actually surprised no one has thought to make a movie about the family. The attached narrative explains the different family members. The narrative comes from the "Dictionary of National Biography, Volumes 1-20". Robert Hungerford caught my attention because he is "awarded very largely to the landed property of his family in Cornwall". If you ever have the chance to read either The White Queen or The Red Queen, you'll be able to have a better understanding of the time period and this family. These books cover the period during the
War of Roses or better known as the Cousins' War. I also highly recommend renting Robin Hood with Russell Crowe.
The reason I'm talking about this family is that they not only marry our Stewart ancestors, but other branches of our family. We've going to be seeing more Hungerfords as time goes on. This family will travel with our family members to Vermont and Ohio. Even through the Hungerford family had strong tied to the British Crown while in England, the family quickly become Americans and fight against the British. Through Find A grave, I've been able to locate some of the Hungerfords graves in England, Fairleigh Hungerford Castle and the Salisbury Cathedral. You can view these in our Media gallery in Ancestry starting on page eight. The headstones will remind you of the Knights Templar from the movie "The Da Vinci Code".
The Stewart Family also marries into another of our family branches, the Spencer's. During this time period and location ( Haddam, Cornwall and Fairfield County, CT), we're going to find a lot of cross over from one family branch to another. We'll discuss the Spencer family at length shortly.
